This August and September we’re featuring several webinars to help you and your family be confident and prepared for the fall and back-to-school season. Register for the sessions below. 

Making allergy management a habit: Tools to help manage more confidently 

August 15 @ 12-1pm EDT

Make life easier, get the tools you need to build new habits for managing food allergy. This session provides tools for both adults and children managing food allergy. Learn about the science of habits and how to develop ones that can support your family’s food allergy management goals. This is a perfect session for families and youth to help them get ready for the new school year.

What the webinar is about:

Learn how behavioural science can help you form good food allergy management habits and build them into your daily life. You’ll learn:

  • How to develop habits for you and your family 
  • Ways to support your child in their food allergy management

Milk allergy: How to manage it and what to consider from a dietary perspective 

September 19 @ 12-1pm 

Join us to learn about navigating milk allergy and how to address nutritional and other challenges posed by this priority food allergen. 

What the webinar is about:

The difference between milk allergy and lactose intolerance, the prevalence of milk allergy, and the possibility for outgrowing it. With this session, you’ll also gain a better understanding of managing milk allergy, preventing allergic reactions through the avoidance of milk and milk proteins, and the impact on the diet. You can submit your questions upon registration, this helps us know what you’re most interested in learning.

Dr. Carina Venter, an allergy specialist dietitian and associate professor in pediatric allergy and immunology at Children’s Hospital Colorado and the University of Colorado.

Treating anaphylaxis and what you need to know about Benadryl® 

September 28 @ 12-1pm 

Join us for an informative webinar about epinephrine as the first-line treatment for anaphylaxis, the most serious type of allergic reaction and what antihistamines have a role to play.

What the webinar is about:

The importance of using epinephrine to treat anaphylaxis, when antihistamines might be given, and what the safety concerns are with first-generation antihistamines, like Benadryl®. This will be followed by a Q&A, where you can ask your questions. Plus, you can submit your questions in advance upon registration.

Register your 7-15-year-old and have them connect with other youth with food allergy! Our fall session of Allergy Pals and Allies starts September 24. This free 8-week online mentorship program provides youth with unique and transformative sessions that are fun and engaging.

Small group webinar on managing food allergy and anaphylaxis: Next session is next week! 

Get your questions on managing food allergy and anaphylaxis answered while connecting with others! Attend a free 90-minute interactive webinar led by a trained parent mentor. You’ll learn fundamental information about daily management and living confidently with food allergy and anaphylaxis. 

These sessions are geared towards parents of children who have been recently diagnosed with a food allergy. It’s also a great session for others who are interested in this topic or would like a refresher. Following the session, you’ll be able to answer: 

Small Group webinar series
  • What are food allergy and anaphylaxis 
  • How to avoid a reaction 
  • What are the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis 
  • What to do in an emergency

Connect with a support group

Support groups provide a positive and caring environment for you to get help in dealing with the day-to-day stress of being at risk of anaphylaxis or having a child who is at risk. 

Plus, it’s a great way to keep updated on any new developments in the food allergy community and exchange tips for navigating food allergy during the school year. 

Find a support group near you and connect now! If there isn’t one in your community, we’ll help you get one started. 

Support group meet up: Metro Vancouver Anaphylaxis Group

The Metro Vancouver Anaphylaxis Group is hosting an event at Trout Lake in East Vancouver on Saturday, September 23rd from 9:30-11:30am. It will be an opportunity to meet each other and connect in person. Families and parents of kids with food allergy, as well as adults with food allergy, are welcome.

The Niagara Food Allergy Parents Support Group is having a meeting on Monday, August 14th. Location TBA.

Encore series: Be prepared and be confident for back-to-school  

In this series, we feature past webinars. This month, watch our sessions focused on back-to-school through ages and stages. 

Parents

Watch our webinar “Parents’ questions answered live”. During this session, the youth panel answered your questions on eating in schools, how to get teachers and peers to be supportive, how anaphylaxis has been handled at school, along with managing social situations, bullying, and more.


Youth

Learn how to speak up about your food allergy, how to deal with unwanted teasing or bullying, how to stay safe at lunch/snack time, spreading allergy awareness at school, and the importance of carrying your auto-injector with you at all times.


High school student

Learn what to expect, tips and strategies for managing in a high school environment, and how to prepare for the transition. Hear from a panel of youth with food allergy on first-hand experiences, learn how to educate others and build a support system, and discover relevant resources to prepare.


College/university students

Learn tips and best practices on how to navigate post-secondary school, and live safely on campus with food allergy. Hear from a panel that shares their experiences, insight, and strategies on how youth can identify food allergy risks on campus and how to prepare accordingly.
