FACT: Some people have both categories of food allergy: Immunoglobulin E (IgE)- and non-IgE-mediated food allergy.
With an IgE-mediated food allergy, symptoms result from the body’s immune system making IgE antibodies when a specific food is eaten.
In contrast, a non-IgE-mediated food allergy involves other components of the immune system causing symptoms, rather than IgE antibodies.
Examples of allergic conditions which include non-IgE-mediated food allergy are eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) and food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES).
